    One who leaves the land of Luanda. One who stops paying tax, customs duty, tribute. Name given to the native of any of the islands adjacent to the city of Luanda. Islander.

    Hist. It was after the cession of the island, then belonging to Ngola, to the king of Congo — aided by the Portuguese led by Francisco de Gouveia in 1570 — from the invasion and occupation suffered for 12 years by the ugolas, that the native ceased to pay the customs duty on the export of the njimbu, fished by him, to that kingdom, where it circulated as currency (money).
