Lesson 6Historical spelling

Noun Classes VII and VIII

SUBSTANTIVO CL. VII e VIII

Rule §13

Class VII takes prefix tu— in the singular and matu— in the plural, and is very rare; many words that begin with tu— instead have that syllable as part of the root and belong to class IX (e.g. tulu 'chest', pl. jitulu).

Chatelain’s original wording (1889)

A cl. VII tem no sing. o pref. tu—, e no pl. matu—. São rarissimos os nomes d'esta classe. Em muitos nomes que começam por tu—, esta syllaba faz parte do radical. e esses nomes pertencem à cl. IX. Ex.: tulu, peito, pl. jitulu.

Rule §14

Class VIII takes prefix ku— in the singular and maku— in the plural, and consists almost entirely of infinitives (verbal nouns) that only take a plural when usage gives them a concrete meaning; classes IV-VIII all share the same plural prefix ma—, which replaces the singular prefix in class IV but is placed in front of it in classes V-VIII.

Chatelain’s original wording (1889)

A cl. VIII tem no sing. o pref. ku— e no pl. maku—. Quasi todos os nomes d'esta cl. são infinitivos, nomes verbaes. Só admittem o plur., quando o uso lhes dá uma significação concreta. As cl. IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, têem o mesmo pref. pl. ma—; porém na cl. IV este pref. pl. substitue o pref. sing., emquanto que nas cl. V, VI, VII, VIII lhe fica anteposto.
